Rain After Drought? Here’s Why New York Roads Will Be EXTRA Slippery!
As rain is forecasted to return tonight into Thursday, it’s important to keep in mind a driving hazard that often catches people off guard
The slick roads right after a long drought.
The first rain after a long period can create dangerous conditions, especially near intersections like traffic lights and stop signs.
We haven’t experienced rain in a while, the oil and residue that has built up on the roads from vehicles will mix with the rain, creating a slippery surface.
This can make it especially hazardous for drivers, particularly when it comes to stopping or accelerating.
Here's The Trick
When you approach stop signs or traffic lights, reduce your speed early, allowing for a smoother, more controlled stop.
It’s easy to forget that the oil residue, combined with the wet pavement, can cause even us seasoned drivers to lose traction.
Some may notice their tires spin when accelerating—even with good tires—while others, particularly those with bald or worn tires, may find it even more challenging to maintain control.
It’s best to accelerate gently and avoid sudden moves as well.
Idiot Drivers
Unfortunately, not all drivers will heed this advice. Aggressive drivers in our area, who are often in a hurry, may still ride your bumper or dart in and out of traffic, oblivious to the changed road conditions.
This is where patience becomes key—drive defensively ( Like a New Yorker) and stay calm, keeping a safe distance from other vehicles.
Even though this phenomenon isn’t unique to our area; it’s a reminder that, whether it’s the first rain after a drought or the first snow of winter, the road conditions can be treacherous.
Stay safe by slowing down and adjusting your driving habits. Your patience could prevent an accident—and protect not only you but also others on the road.
