Revenge Porn Is Now Illegal In New York State
Governor Andrew Cuomo recently signed a new bill to make revenge porn illegal in New York.
The New York Post reports that on Tuesday, July 23, 2019, Governor Cuomo signed a bill into law to make revenge porn illegal in New York State. The bill will allow victims to get their images and videos pulled off the internet, as well as allowing victims to seek a court-ordered injunction that would require websites to remove images without their consent.
According to the New York Post, people who post revenge porn would also face a year of jail time, a fine of up to $1,000, and potential civil fines for the dissemination or publication of an intimate image, that seeks to cause emotional, physical, or financial pain. Under this law, victims have three years from the time the image is posted, or one year from the time they discovered the image, to request the injunction.
The law takes effect in 60 days, according to the New York Post.
