This Class Could Help You Survive An Active Shooter Crisis

In the wake of a number of mass shootings, officials in Dutchess County will hold classes to make sure you survive if confronted with an active shooter situation.

Dutchess County Sheriff Adrian “Butch” Anderson, along with the Dutchess County Department of Behavioral and Community Health and the Dutchess County Department of Emergency Response, announced the county will host active shooter awareness classes in April.

The classes will be about two hours and broken into two parts.

The first part will be taught by a member of the Sheriff’s Office and will focus on what you should and shouldn’t do if you are ever confronted by an active shooter.

The second part will be taught by a member of the Department of Behavioral and Community Health and will focus on steps you can take if you or someone else was shot and there was no access to emergency services.

The classes are scheduled as follows:

Part 1: Saturday, April 7, from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. or 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. in room 113 at the Dutchess County Department of Emergency Response on Creek Road in Poughkeepsie.
Part 2: Saturday, April 14, from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. or 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. in room 113 at the Dutchess County Department of Emergency Response on Creek Road in Poughkeepsie.

The classes are geared towards increasing awareness about what to do if you are confronted with an active-shooter-type situation and are meant to provide general guidance on what can be done to give you and those around you the best chance of survival, officials say.

“The classes are in no way meant to train someone to handle an active shooter situation themselves or take any action which would be best performed by trained law enforcement and medical personnel,” the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.

The classes are free and all are welcome to attend. If you would like to attend, you must register by contacting the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office Training Division at (845) 486-3870 or via email at dcsotraining@dutchessny.gov.

Future classes in other parts of Dutchess County are being considered.
