A woman died after falling into freezing water in the Hudson River.

It's believed the woman walked onto the iced-over Hudson River near Poughkeepsie on Saturday afternoon and fell through the ice.

Around 3:45 p.m., City of Poughkeepsie 911 received two calls from people at the Ice House restaurant reporting that a woman had crawled out onto the ice in the Hudson River. The woman crawled to the open channel in the middle of the river, where the woman then entered the water, police say.

A passing tugboat towing a barge attempted to rescue the woman but was unsuccessful. A private citizen using their drone was able to spot the woman, who was now under the ice, according to police.

The Coast Guard used large mallets to break the ice and reach the woman, NBC reports.

She was unresponsive when rescuers pulled her from the water and later pronounced dead at a local hospital, police say.

Her name and age haven't been released. Police are continuing their investigation into the death.
