Bert's Bread House Turns Burt's Hideout

Back in 2019, which honestly feels like centuries ago, an adorable bakery/bread house opened in the Village of Fishkill, serving up the most amazing cookies, breads, pastries, breakfast sandwiches and beverages.

I remember visiting shortly after they had their grand opening, and getting completely hooked on their soft pretzels (i'm a sucker for a homemade soft pretzel, and their different varieties of pretzels were top notch, 10/10).

In 2023 the Bread House closed for a bit, announcing that they would rebrand and soon reopen to better meet the needs of the community, and we then welcomed Bert's Hideout to Fishkill.

After a few months of working on the inside of the space, and tweaking the menu, the 'Hideout' still offered some of the signature baked goods, sandwiches and sweets, but expanded their savory menu and offered beer, wine and hard cider, too. They also hosted several local musicians for intimate performances in the space.

Bert's Hideout Owners Announce Retirement

Fast forward to present day, 2026, I actually looked on their Facebook to see if they had posted any information about pre-ordering for Super Bowl (yes, pretzels), and noticed that their socials were fairly quiet, with the last post going up just before Christmas.

On Monday, February 9th, Bert's confirmed what some had suspected, they had closed the Hideout.

Hi everyone, we decided to retire. Thanks for support through the years.

Customers and community members were quick to wish them well, while also simultaneously expressing their sadness and sharing how much they're going to miss their delicious offerings and welcoming environment.

Wishing owners Bert and Diane Premuto the best of luck in their retirement, and also wondering if they'd be willing to share that pretzel recipe....asking for a friend.
