A Long Island man is accused of being under the influence during an accident that killed his 28-year-old passenger.

Andrew Casey, 22, of Sound Beach was driving a 2004 Chevy Blazer northbound on Route 9 in Clermont Saturday night when the car veered off the roadway and onto the shoulder. The car struck several trees and a utility pole before it stopped down an embankment, the New York State Police said in a press release.

Red Hook resident Andrew Clarke, a passenger in the car, was partially ejected during the crash and pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers who arrived at the scene interviewed Casey and believed him to be intoxicated. He was arrested and charged with vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated. He was transported to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

The roadway was closed for several hours as the New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit investigated the fatal accident. Toxicology reports are still pending.

The New York State Police asked anyone with information about the crash to contact the Livingston barracks at (845) 677-7300.
