High winds left 14,000 households and businesses without power Monday afternoon, Central Hudson Gas & Electric announced. Many customers may remain without electric into Tuesday.

Central Hudson said power had been restored to 8,500 customers by mid-afternoon. However, wind gusts of over 50 miles per hour downed trees and limbs, damaging power lines and causing extensive service interruptions.

Because of the extent of the damage and the continued heavy winds, Central Hudson said customers affected by outages may not have service restored tonight. With frigid overnight temperatures expected, Central Hudson advised customers to seek shelter elsewhere if restoration times were not available for their location by early evening.

According to Central Hudson's outage map, the bulk of the 184 outages reported in their coverage area were concentrated in Dutchess and Ulster counties. Some 4,100 customers in Dutchess and 9,200 in Ulster were affected by the outages as of 4:30PM. About 200 customers in Orange, 139 in Putnam and nine in Sullivan were among the outages.

Customers may contact Central Hudson at 845-452-2700 or on the web at CentralHudson.com to report outages and get updates about restoration times.

Central Hudson estimates power will be restored to all customers by Tuesday at 10PM.
