State Route 218 Reopens with Upgrades for Improved Durability

State Route 218 in the Town of Highlands, Orange County, has officially reopened following extensive reconstruction after the severe flooding of July 2023. This historic 102-year-old road, also known as Storm King Highway, is a critical link connecting the United States Military Academy at West Point and other key Hudson Valley destinations.

Upgraded Infrastructure

The reconstruction of Route 218 included significant upgrades designed to improve its resilience against future extreme weather events. Key improvements include a newly installed oversized box culvert and an armored embankment that can manage runoff from rare, severe weather conditions. These upgrades ensure that the road is better equipped to handle the impacts of climate change. The extensive project also involved rebuilding a collapsed section with over 35,000 tons of recycled stone fill, and the addition of new asphalt, guide rails, and updated pavement markings.

Enhanced Resilience and Community Access

The newly reconstructed roadway now features advanced drainage and stormwater management systems that enhance its ability to cope with heavy rainfall and flooding. This upgrade ensures reliable access to important local attractions such as Storm King State Park and the Town of Cornwall. Additionally, the road includes aesthetic stone treatments that blend seamlessly with the natural landscape, preserving the scenic beauty of the Hudson Valley.

Community and Government Support

Local leaders, including Representative Pat Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer, have praised the reopening, emphasizing the road’s essential role in regional recovery and its improved durability. The State Department of Transportation has been commended for its efficient and effective work. Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus highlighted the benefits of enhanced access for both residents and emergency responders.

Looking Ahead

The reopening of State Route 218 represents a significant milestone in the Hudson Valley’s recovery from the July 2023 floods. With these crucial upgrades, the roadway is now better prepared to face future challenges and continue supporting regional travel and connectivity.
