A local Sears is set to close its doors this spring.

The Sears department store at the Galleria at Crystal Run will close this April. A liquidation sale will begin Jan. 6, 2017.

Director of Corporate Communications for Sears Holding Howard Riefs said the following in an email to Townsquare Media of the Hudson Valley:

We can confirm that we are making the difficult, but necessary decision to close the Sears store and Sears Auto Center at 1 N. Galleria Drive in Middletown. The store will close to the public in mid-April. Until then, the store will remain open for customers. The store will begin its liquidation sale on January 6. We have been strategically and aggressively evaluating our store space and productivity, and will be accelerating the closing of unprofitable stores as we have previously announced. We often hear from our members who are disappointed when we close a store, but our Shop Your Way membership platform, websites and mobile apps allow us to maintain these valued relationships long after a store closes its doors. As a result, we hope to retain a portion of the sales previously associated with this store by maintaining our relationships with the members who shopped this location.

The Sears at Crystal Run opened in 1992 and is not the first department store in the Hudson Valley to close its doors.

With the rise of online shopping, many stores in malls are being forced to close up shop.
