Valentine's Day is the perfect time to show off your at-home cooking skills. Take it up a notch this year with a perfect wine pairing.

Going out for Valentine's Day can be stressful, expensive, and possibly not the vibe you're going for. If you're staying in this Valentine's Day, is easy to impress your Valentine by having a wine pairing set up for your meal. You can really bring out all the stops by using local ingredients and wines. Below are a description of wine pairings for classic proteins and a local wine that would work great.

Salmon

According to Wine Folly, salmon typically pairs well with full-bodied white wines. If salmon is your main entree for Valentine's Day, check out oak-aged Chardonnays. Make sure to get an oak-aged Chardonnay and not a steel barrel Chardonnay, as the oak-aged will give you the perfect buttery flavor to go with the oily salmon. Brotherhood Winery has a great Chardonnay to pair perfectly with your fish.

Filet Mignon

Filet Mignon is one of the most tender cuts of beef and rarely has any waste. It's usually served with sauces and if the sauce has a stronger taste than the meat, take that into consideration when pairing. Usually, a dry red wine works best with filet mignon, according to Cellar Notes. Something like a merlot or cabernet sauvignon would be great. Robibero Winery's 87 South is a red blend and is absolutely incredible.

Lobster

Lobster, like salmon, is rich seafood and goes best with white wine. JJ Buckley Fine Wines recommends a Chardonnay but says it doesn't have to be specifically oak-aged or steel-barrel aged. For a steel-barrel Chardonnay, try Benmarl Winery's Stainless Steel Chardonnay. It's not buttery at all and I think it would be great with lobster since it's not buttery like lobster dishes typically are.

Chicken

Depending on what cut of chicken you use, your wine pairing options can really change. For white meat, try a white wine like a Sauvignon Blanc, according to Wine Folly. I love the Awosting White from Whitecliff Vineyard and highly recommend it. It's light and crisp but still dry.
