It’s Easy to Celebrate Lighthouse Day in NY, Plus Ones For Sale
National Lighthouse Day is August 7, 2017 and New York makes it easy to visit a lighthouse with over 60 spread accross the state, from NYC, think Statue of Liberty, (yes, it was once also a lighthouse) to Buffalo, which has 6.
Locally here in the Hudson Valley, the three lighthouses that are a familiar part of the landscape are the ones located on the Espous, the one on the Rondout and the one in Saugerties.
- Esopus Meadows Lighthouse, accessible from Port Ewen, built in 1871.
- Rondout Creek Lighthouse, built in 1831. Occasionally, tours are available that showcase both of the above lighthouses.
- Saugerties Lighthouse, built in 1869. Tours are available and it is also a working bed and breakfast.
Is just visiting a lighthouse not enough for you? Would you ever think about buying one? There are a few that are being auctioned off right now. Of course, they are not local. You would have to move to either Michigan or Maryland if you were the winner of the auction, plus after looking at the photos, there is a great deal of work that needs to be done to bring them to a livable state.
