Jackie Robinson Day 2026

For those who may not be big into baseball, Jackie Robinson is one of the most iconic baseball players of all time.

On April 15th, 1947, Robinson broke the MLB color barrier becoming the first African American baseball player to play in the modern era of baseball. He played first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers making him a "monumental figure in the American civil rights movement."

Robinson's journey to Major League Baseball was a courageous one. After leaving UCLA (where he was a 4 sport athlete playing football, basketball, track, and baseball), he served in the U.S. Army in World War II. According to the Jackie Robinson Museum website he was later court martialed and:

and honorably discharged for standing up for his rights and refusing to move to the back of a segregated military bus.

When Robinson returned home, he made the decision to play baseball in the Negro Leagues. His talents caught the eye of Branch Rickey.

This is where the Hudson Valley comes into play.

A Historic Moment: Jackie Robinson + Bear Mountain Inn

Branch Rickey was the general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers back in 1945.

The Jackie Robinson Museum explains that a the time Rickey invited Robinson to "become the first African American to play with the all-white Dodgers' farm team, the Montreal Royals."

New York State Parks explains that the meeting between Robinson and Rickey to discuss the deal took place at Bear Mountain State Park.

As the story goes, Robinson traveled to Bear Mountain State Park because there were wartime travel restrictions in 1945 and the Dodgers, as well as the New York Knicks and New York Giants football club, were all practicing there for spring training.

Robinson signed the deal to play with the minor-league Montreal Royals right here in the Hudson Valley.

This has to go down as one of more legendary moments in sports history in the Hudson Valley.
