LGBTQ Pride Exhibit Opens At NY State Capitol
June is LGBTQ Pride Month.
In honor of LGBTQ Pride Month this year, Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced that a Pride Month exhibit has opened at the New York State Capitol. The exhibit is titled "Equality Will Never Be Silent". According to a press release from Governor Cuomo's office, the exhibit celebrates the New York State LGBTQ community.
Within the exhibit, 16 LGBTQ New Yorkers are highlighted for their political, cultural, and artistic impacts, according to the press release. The name of the exhibit comes from a quote by Harvey Milk, who said, "Hope will never be silent." Expect to see aan interpretive panel chronicling the 1969 Stonewall uprising and a panel dedicated to the history of the Pride flag.
Three New Yorkers are also honored for their bias-motivated murders, according to the press release. Their deaths lead to stronger protections for LGBTQ individuals in New York State. There is also a display of the International AIDS Memorial Quilt.
