I'm not from New York. I understand that I still have a lot to learn about The Empire State. I did learn that nickname. Almost everyone in America knows that one and for obvious reasons. I have lived in the Hudson Valley region for almost 20 years now and I just recently learned that a lower Hudson Valley city has one of the most unique nicknames I had ever heard.

Mount Vernon is a largely populated and diverse city they is the cutoff between Westchester County and East Bronx. It's not exactly known for being the safest city in New York. According to Neighborhood Scout, Mount Vernon has a crime index of 30 and there are roughly 16 crimes per 1,000 residents. Mount Vernon does have a reputation of being the safest place.

Mount Vernon has a few nicknames. It's known as the 'jewel of Westchester' and the "rolling hills of homes."

Did you know that Mount Vernon had this hilarious nickname?

I discovered that people around here refer to Mount Vernon as "money earnin' Mount Vernon" and I can't believe I didn't know this. I wish I had heard this earlier.

Mount Vernon is the only place with an odd nickname. Did you know they call it "boogie down Bronx" around here?

I can't figure out how Mount Vernon earned this nickname. Is it because more people commute to work in the city than who live there? Do people make good money there? Or is it simply based off the song from Heavy D.
