The world of wine can be an intimidating one if you're not familiar with it. Thankfully, there are some experts right in the heart of Poughkeepsie who love steering both wine enthusiasts and newcomers in the right direction.

I admit that my knowledge of wine is very limited. Before getting to know the crew at 1915 Wine Cellar, I'd look at a shelf of wine bottles and tense up. I don't know why most of us feel overwhelmed around a bottle of wine. It's ironic that wine is associated with affluence since wine has been the beverage of people from all classes since the days of ancient Rome.

The 1915 Wine Cellar is a gem located on Cannon Street in Poughkeepsie where all wine lovers are welcomed no matter how experienced their palate might be.

Russell Beck, who owns the 1915 Wine Cellar along with his wife Elke and their son Kai, gave me a lesson on what to look for—and look out for—when sampling wine and how to get the full flavor and aroma of what you're trying. You can watch me evolve into a sophisticated wine enthusiast in the video below.

From sophisticated to casual bottles and glasses, the 1915 Wine Cellar has a wine for everyone and the family-owned establishment prides itself on proving it every month. The wine of the month for March is Yantra made by Tenuta Sette Ciele. It's a delicious red from Bolgheri, Italy that's a mix of Merlot and Cabernet.

This month you can receive a 10 percent discount by mentioning WRRV when purchasing your bottle of Yantra. Tenuta Sette Ciele winemaker Elena Pozzolini will be on hand for a special wine pairing dinner at 1915 Wine Cellar on Thursday, March 5. Space at the event is limited and tickets can be purchased through Eventbrite.

Besides delicious wine, the 1915 Wine Cellar pumps out live music from local performers on Saturdays, serves up fresh food prepared by a CIA graduate and even has a diverse beer menu. The wine bar is changing up their happy hour options with a "7 Before 6" menu; everything on their happy hour menu will be $7 before 6PM.

The 1915 Wine Cellar is a place that's full of life in downtown Poughkeepsie and your plans are begging to include this place. Learn more about them at their website, Facebook and Instagram page or take a stroll down to 40 Cannon St. Tuesdays through Thursdays from 4PM to 10PM and Fridays and Saturdays from 4PM to midnight.
