Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been a hot topic for quite some time, with the overall feelings towards the uptick in AI usage all over the map. Recently, one major retailer with locations across the United States has announced that they will be relying on AI-powered technology for another hot-topic subject...receipt checking.

Sam's Club Implements AI Technology Into Receipt Checking

In what's being referred to as an initiative that is 'leading retail industry with customer experience innovation,' Sam's Club has developed an AI and video technology powered 'exit technology' system, with exit technology referring to the receipt checking protocol for customers leaving their stores.

To date, Sam's Club has rolled out the new innovation at 120 (which is about 20%) of total locations, which is said to have resulted in members leaving the club 23% faster, and with more than half of members getting the 'friction-free exit experience.'

Sam’s Club is uniquely positioned as the first retailer to not only extensively deploy this technology at scale, but also to successfully build, design and roll it out in-house, addressing member pain points in the purchase-to-exit process.

In their April 30th press release, parent company WalMart indicated that all Sam's Club locations should have the exit technology by the end of 2024.

So How Does It Work?

Those who are familiar with club style shopping (Sam's, BJs, Costco), typically know that upon exiting, customers are required to show their receipt at the door and wait for an employee to cross check their receipt with their shopping cart items. The new exit technology 'is used to seamlessly confirm members have paid for all items in their shopping carts – without requiring an associate to check members’ purchases before leaving the club.'

The way things work with the new exit technology, is that a computer vision and digital technology combination snaps a picture of the shopping carts, while verifying payment for all said items, and the reliance is primarily on AI in the background to keep the process moving.

These are the Items You Should Be Buying At Sam's Club

There are items that you can buy at a grocery store or items you can buy at a big-box store, however, if you are looking to save money, Sam's Club is the place to shop. Sam's Club allows you to buy the items you use the most in bulk, and that means you are going to be saving money.
