Hudson Valley fire departments are busy this week getting the word out about a dangerous trend that has been shared on social media platforms. The trend is risky enough that the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services has now issued a memo.

I saw that the Washingtonville Fire Department had shared the post, which links directly back to the information that the New York State agency is trying to get out. Being that Fire Departments would most likely be the people responding to that call, it makes sense that they want to warn parents, guardians, and people in general about this trend that may have already caused a situation in a local school.

Earlier this week, a High School in Wappinger Falls was evacuated during school hours when a computer started smoking, resulting the a fire alarm. It has not been confirmed that this incident was definitely connected to the TikTok trend, but it had some of the same elements.

The information being shared on TikTok is all about how to make a Chromebook smoke. As you know, with the smoke, you also will get fire, which, in the case of a Chromebook, results in chemicals burning. Inhalation of those chemicals can be harmful.
