Rescue Airboats for New York State First Responders

Recently, the Lumberland Fire Department in Glen Spey, NY shared a water recue operation after a woman became stranded in a local river. Instead of using a raft, helicopter, or even standard boat, the department was able to use something much more helpful: an airboat.

When Do First Responders Use Airboats?

While not as well-known as other vehicles, rescue airboats can be vital when responding to emergencies on thin ice, shallow water, and rough waters as their unique capabilities and characteristics are unlike any other vehicle:

Airboats can traverse very shallow water; it rides high on rough and raging currents; and it can skim over land, snow, and ice. Skid plates on the bottom of the aluminum hull help avoid serious damage caused by semi submerged rocks.

Airboats are just one of the many ways rescue workers can make sure that every emergency has the appropriate response. Check out some more nontraditional operations below.
