Just when it seemed like the Hudson Valley had seen every type of emergency rescue, a Sullivan County Fire Department showed that they have at least one more trick up their sleeve.
From pulling drivers from burning vehicles to rope teams saving stranded pets, first responders are able to react appropriately to each unique situation thanks to extensive training. .. and specialized equipment.
Specialized Equipment for New York First Responders
While items like hydraulic rescue tools (often known as the Jaws of Life) are required for operations when a subject is trapped inside a vehicle, another kind of purpose-built equipment is used when responding to an emergency on thin ice or shallow water.
Rescue Airboats for New York State First Responders
Recently, the Lumberland Fire Department in Glen Spey, NY shared a water recue operation after a woman became stranded in a local river. Instead of using a raft, helicopter, or even standard boat, the department was able to use something much more helpful: an airboat.
When Do First Responders Use Airboats?
While not as well-known as other vehicles, rescue airboats can be vital when responding to emergencies on thin ice, shallow water, and rough waters as their unique capabilities and characteristics are unlike any other vehicle:
Airboats can traverse very shallow water; it rides high on rough and raging currents; and it can skim over land, snow, and ice. Skid plates on the bottom of the aluminum hull help avoid serious damage caused by semi submerged rocks.
