A popular clothing chain with numerous locations across New York and three in the Hudson Valley, NY, has announced its plans to close 180 stores across the country.

Over the last few years, we have witnessed one of the biggest shifts in the world of retail as numerous big-name companies have announced plans to close many brick-and-mortar stores and move to a more digital approach.

JCPenney was one of the first to make the digital shift, and now it appears one of the country's biggest plus-size clothing chains is following a similar path.

Torrid Closing Stores

According to USA Today, one of the most popular plus-size clothing chains, Torrid, has announced its plans to move to a more digital-forward approach and close 180 underperforming stores this year.

Torrid CEO Lisa Harper made the announcement after the company shared its first quarter earnings report on June 5th. The report indicated that 70% of Torrid customers shop on the store's website and that the retailer suffered a nearly 5% decrease in first-quarter sales compared to last year.

Torrid, which primarily sells plus-size clothing (sizes 10-30) and accessories for women, is known for its focus on fit and designs that aim to empower curvy women to feel confident and stylish.

What Torrid Stores are Closing?

The company didn't specify which stores would be closing yet, but did say that it's planning to close nearly 30% of its brick-and-mortar footprint. Currently, there are over 625 stores across the U.S.

Torrid Stores in New York Closing?

It's unclear if any of the retailer's New York stores will close or not, but Torrid does have numerous stores across New York State, including stores in Bronx, Shirley, Levittown, and Yonkers.

There are two Torrid stores in the Hudson Valley, including stores in the Poughkeepsie Galleria on Route 9 in Poughkeepsie, NY, and at the Galleria at Crystal Run in Middletown, NY.
