Gun owners of New York may be shocked to know that there is an agenda to force them to insure their firearms in case they harm someone.

We have liability coverage on our motor vehicles. Should gun owners be forced to have large sums of coverage on their legal firearms?

As a gun owner, I was shocked to hear about an active State Senate Bill S2857. Basically, it's going to require LEGAL gun owners with REGISTERED firearms to have their guns insured for a minimum of $1 Million.

The bill states:

"2353. FIREARM OWNERS INSURANCE POLICIES. 1. ANY PERSON IN THIS STATE WHO SHALL OWN A FIREARM SHALL, PRIOR TO SUCH OWNERSHIP, OBTAIN AND CONTINUOUSLY MAINTAIN A POLICY OF LIABILITY INSURANCE IN AN AMOUNT NOT LESS THAN ONE MILLION DOLLARS SPECIFICALLY COVERING ANY DAMAGES RESULT- ING FROM ANY NEGLIGENT OR WILLFUL ACTS INVOLVING THE USE OF SUCH FIREARM WHILE IT IS OWNED BY SUCH PERSON. FAILURE TO MAINTAIN SUCH INSURANCE SHALL RESULT IN THE IMMEDIATE REVOCATION OF SUCH OWNER'S REGISTRATION, LICENSE AND ANY OTHER PRIVILEGE TO OWN SUCH FIREARM."

I have a huge problem with the last line as owning a firearm is not a privilege. It's a right protected by the constitution.

Will this be a registry? Is it a violation of your rights protected under the second amendment? Technically, you can own the firearm. You just need to keep it insured?

Will gun owners be forced to pay a monthly premium? It's unfair to compare the liability of cars to the liability behind guns. Vehicles are on the road almost everyday. Most responsible gun owners have their weapons locked up and they may never hurt anyone.

Keep in mind that this liability coverage does already exist and it's not necesarily a terrible thing. It can help protect gun owners if their firearms are lost or stolen and used in criminal cases.
