Is This Area of New York Missing Out On These Rides?
I was recently traveling for work in Indianapolis, and before I left, heard from multiple people that I needed to try out this particular mode of transportation.
You gotta try the scooters in Indy!
Make sure you use the scooters to get around downtown!
What I didn't expect was just how many of them I would find, and how this whole operation works.
Have You Ever Rented an Electric Scooter?
A few weeks ago when I went down to Queens for the Foo Fighters show at Citi Field, we spotted a number of CitiBike stations on our walk to the stadium. These are pretty common across NYC, and you can reserve them through lyft.
In Indy, though, there were TONS of these Lime Electric Scooters across the city, not quite organized the same way as in NY with our bike rentals. When we were dropped off to our hotel, upon getting out of the Uber, there were scooters everywhere; on the sidewalk leading up to the entrance, at the entrance to the park across the street, outside of businesses. Though the instructions say otherwise (aka, don't just leave them wherever when you're done riding), it kind of appeared that way.
Anytime I walked out of the hotel and headed across the street to the conference I was attending, or walked into downtown for dinner, even when I got picked up at 6am to catch my flight, people were zipping through the area on the neon green scooters; and yes, that includes me too.
The Lime scooters are able to be reserved through the Uber app, or you can just walk up to any available one, check to see the charge, scan a QR code and be on your way.
Why Can't We Cruise This Area Of New York Like This
Now i'm not sure of the logistics of how this would work in certain parts of the Hudson Valley, but I do feel like we're missing out a little. NYC does offer Lime e-scooters in parts of the Bronx and Queens, but what about us not too far north?
I can just picture how popular these scooters would be in a place like Beacon, where there are so many businesses on that stretch of Main Street to visit, but we'd definitely need some guidelines as to where they'd be able to be driven safely...those sidewalks are not ideal, and we all know about Beacon congestion.
What about one of our villages that has a lot of walkable space and parks, I'd totally cruise around and take in the sights in style on a scooter.
On the other hand, I can just imagine how dangerous they could be in certain areas of Poughkeepsie with the way people already drive....
Two questions:
- Have you ever rented one of these amazing modes of transportation?
- If you could pick an ideal place in the Hudson Valley for these to be available, where would it be?
Rochester, Minnesota has em, and even put together a fun 'how to' guide for successful travel.
