Man Walking With Gun in Rochester, NY

According to a New York State Police (NYSP) press release, it started on Monday, February 16, 2026, at approximately 12:42 p.m., when troopers from the Ellenville barracks were called to respond to a report of a male subject holding a handgun while walking southbound on Queens Highway toward State Route 209 in the town of Rochester, NY.

Upon arrival, troopers located the man matching the description provided by the caller to Ulster County 911 and issued multiple commands for the subject to show his hands.

New York State Police Shoot Man in Ulster County, NY

At that point police said the man refused to comply and displayed what appeared to be a handgun. That's when troopers discharged their weapons, striking the man. Troopers immediately began administering first aid to the man and called for emergency medical services. The man, who was not identified, was airlifted to the Westchester Medical Center. He is listed in critical but stable condition.

Following the shooting, investigators announced that the handgun possessed by the individual was a pellet gun. Anyone with information related to this incident is asked to contact the New York State Police, SP Ellenville, Bureau of Criminal Investigation, at 845-344-5300.
