The Bear Mountain Bridge was closed to traffic this week due to what was initially described as "police activity". Now, more information has emerged about the multi-agency response.

While the initial report from the Orange County Sheriff's Office's included details about their Crisis Negotiation Team, the Westchester County Police Department recently shared the part their Emergency Service Unit played as well.

Police Activity on the Bear Mountain Bridge

On Wednesday, May 28th 2025, an update from the New York State Bridge Authority informed commuters that the Bear Mountain Bridge had been closed to traffic (below). The following day, the Orange County Sheriff's Office explained the incident further.

Crisis Negotiation Team on the Bear Mountain Bridge

"Yesterday, our Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) sprang into action on the Bear Mountain Bridge", read their post on Facebook (below). The mental health crisis was further explained by the Westchester County Police Department.

"Police Activity" on the Bear Mountain Bridge Explained

"At 12:50 p.m., a report was received that a man who fled from police in Orange County had exited his vehicle and climbed to the outside of the bridge structure", they shared (below). In a collaborative effort from crisis negotiators, the subject reportedly allowed the Emergency Service Unit to help them to safety.

The multi-agency response used expertise from several different departments, a display of teamwork that the Westchester Police Department gratefully acknowledged.
