A man will soon be facing criminal charges for being ratted out by the very device he attempted to steal.

Have you ever unlocked your phone and accidentally taken a selfie instead of taking a photo of the intended subject? Maybe unintentionally opened the video app on your phone?

Of course you have.

But it probably didn't lead to criminal charges for you.

It's the sort of thing you can rest assured will be happening more and more thanks to cloud technology and devices being connected. A man in Venice, California broke into a home and stole a cell phone, but not without first accidentally catching himself in the act.

The owner of the phone was able to remotely access the video the man recorded of himself and report it to the Los Angeles Police Department, who are currently hoping that the publicly released photo will help them track down the culprit.

If you happen to know who this might be, LAPD would love to speak to you. It's certainly better for the victim that he remotely accessed a photo of the thief's face and not, I don't know, photos the crook took of his junk to send to women.

On a side note, we should all start using the word "crook" again.
