This New Jersey Turtle Was Forgotten on a Kitchen Floor for 50 Years
Imagine spending five decades confined to the same kitchen floor, relying on whatever food slipped through the cracks.
That was the real-life horror for Rockalina, a box turtle taken from New Jersey in 1977.
For half a century, she lived indoors, far removed from the woodland environment where she was meant to thrive.
Before she was rescued, Rockalina primarily ate canned cat food, which is not the ideal nutrition a box turtle requires to stay healthy.
While she managed to survive under these conditions, it came at a price.
Years without proper care took a serious toll on her health, leaving her malnourished, struggling with mobility issues, and suffering from necrosis in her left leg.
Her nails had upturned and were at risk of growing back into her own skin as a result of sliding around on the smooth linoleum flooring.
Also, this was the '70s, so there was definitely a green or burnt orange fridge in the kitchen—guaranteed.
Fortunately, she was surrendered to Garden State Tortoise, and they, of course, stepped in to give Rockalina a fresh start.
Now, she’s receiving expert veterinary care, a well-balanced diet, and a secure outdoor space where she can finally experience life as a turtle should.
The organization, known for its work in rehabilitating and rehoming turtles and tortoises, has shared Rockalina’s journey on its YouTube channel to raise awareness about responsible reptile ownership.
For those who want to help with her recovery, Garden State Tortoise is accepting donations via Venmo @GardenStateTortoise (last four digits: 9981).
Every contribution gives Rockalina and other turtles in need a second chance at a better life.
Wild animals belong in their natural habitat. Even with good intentions, keeping them as pets can cause serious harm.
Luckily, Rockalina’s future is finally looking much brighter.
