As of March 27, 2016 it will be less likely for you to get a paper prescription from your doctor. Why? New York State will be the first state in the nation to mandating that doctors, except for veterinarians, electronically prescribe items.

When the health care or medical provider wants to prescribe you a medicine, they will do so now electronically. There will be occasions when the paper scripts are still elegible to be used, but the medical offices across the state have been mandated to use the new system effective March 27, 2016,

Why go to electronic prescriptions? According to www.health.ny.gov:

Utilizing modern prescription technology has the potential to minimize medication errors for patients in New York State. Electronic prescribing also allows for the integration of prescription records directly into the patient’s electronic medical record. Electronic prescribing has the potential to reduce prescription theft and forgery.
