A Sleepy Hollow, New York man was recently sentenced to a lengthy jail term for an attack against his former girlfriend that took place in early 2024.

Domestic Violence Incident, Sleepy Hollow, New York

At approximately 4:30pm on January 2nd 2024, a Sleepy Hollow man 'forcibly entered his ex girlfriend's home,' also in Sleepy Hollow, shooting her with a .38 caliber revolver. At the time of the break-in, and shooting, the victim's young children were said to be present.

The then 37-year old victim survived the attack, with gunshot wounds to her neck and hand, and received treatment at a local hospital. At the time of the incident, the suspect, later identified as Ruben Santiago, who was found to be in violation of an order of protection, was apprehended by the FBI’s Westchester Safe Streets Task Force the next day, police say.

Santiago was arraigned on a 27-count indictment for Attempted Murder in the First Degree, Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, Attempted Assault in the First Degree, three counts of Burglary in the First Degree, two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, Assault in the Second Degree, Aggravated Criminal Contempt and Criminal Contempt in the First Degree, all felonies, and 11 counts of Criminal Contempt in the Second Degree, four counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, and Assault in the Third Degree, all misdemeanors.

Additionally, charges against Santiago included allegations of previously assaulting the victim in December of 2023, which subsequently resulted in the order of protection (OOP). According to the Westchester DA's Office, the OOP was violated several times following being implemented.

On April 25th, The Westchester County DA released the sentence information for Santiago, that in Westchester County Court, he received 20 years to life in state prison, plus five years of post-release supervision for this 'heinous assault.' Additionally, the Judge issued a permanent order of protection on behalf of the victim.

Judge Williams further issued a permanent order of protection on behalf of the victim. In an impact statement read in court, the victim recounted the night of the break in and shooting:

I screamed for help and begged for my life. I was left for dead. These night terrors haunt me now in my sleep.
