Statewide Park Attendance in NY Hits 88.3 Million

For the 12th consecutive year, attendance at New York State parks grew, elevating numbers beyond the prior year yet again when it comes to state parks, historic sites, campgrounds and trails operated by New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.

In a formal Press Release, Governor Kathy Hochul shared the numbers, saying that New York parks saw a record 88.3 million visits across 2024, showing a 5% increase (or +4 million) when compared to 2023 numbers.

There was, though, a significant investment by the Governor's Office in honor of the park system's centennial, that plus events like solar eclipse viewing events, milestone moments and the honoring of influential figures, as well as swimming initiatives at cites across the state.

Record Attendance in 2024 at New York State Parks

Governor Hochul credited the record attendance to the parks across New York offering a 'much-needed break from the addictive digital landscape many are exposed to.

This new attendance record is a result of our commitment to expanding opportunities for residents and visitors alike to enjoy safe, healthy recreation, whether it’s through swimming, hiking, camping, or gathering to take in our world-class vistas, beaches and waterfalls.

As referenced above, the Governor's swimming initiative, which removed pool entry fees also showcased more than 20 facilities that held free swimming lessons, helped to achieve a 36% increase in pool attendance through Labor Day 2024. In total, more than 2,000 participated in learn to swim programs.
