Putnam County SPCA Announces Arrest in Animal Cruelty Investigation

On June 3rd, the Putnam County SPCA announced that a 64-year-old male resident of Fair Street in Patterson had been arrested 'following an animal cruelty investigation involving numerous dogs allegedly found living in neglected conditions.' The investigation, which began in mid-May, resulted in the rescue of approximately 34 dogs living in horrific conditions, allegedly inconsistent with the acceptable minimal standards of care which include basic nutrition, sanitation, medical attention and housing.

According to the announcement, the investigation began

after the Putnam County SPCA received a complaint concerning a large number of dogs allegedly being housed at a residence within the Town of Patterson. Through the course of the investigation, SPCA officers conducted interviews, gathered evidence, reviewed veterinary findings, coordinated with outside agencies and rescue organizations, and evaluated the welfare of the numerous animals located on the property.

The dogs, primarily Labrador Retrievers and French Bulldogs were found to be severely emaciated and 'showing signs of neglect (urine scalding, skin infections, foul odor, and dirty/infected ears).'

The Patterson man was charged with 34 counts of Animal Cruelty - New York State Agriculture & Markets Law, Article 26, Section 353.

Of the many agencies that provided assistance and care during the situation including A New Chance Animal Rescue, Putnam Humane Society, Guardian Veterinary Specialists, Southeast Animal Hospital, Middlebranch Veterinary, Alternate Mobile Veterinary Service Millwood Animal Hospital, CARE of DC in Wappingers also stepped up.

Help Us Help The 'Labs of Patterson'

Following the investigation and seizure of the 30+ dogs in Putnam County, CARE of DC was 'honored' to assist and take in seven of the 'deserving dogs.'

While they are now safe, their journey to recovery is just beginning. These dogs arrived severely underweight and in need of medical care, proper nutrition, and lots of love. Their bodies need time to heal, and they will not be available for adoption for at least several weeks. Right now, our focus is helping them regain their health and strength.

There are a number of ways for the community to get involved and help these rescued pups:
  • Dog food donations: Purina Pro Plan is requested, as this is the food the dogs have been eating and changing their diet at this point in time could lead to digestive upset.
  • Monetary donations: veterinary care, medications, vaccinations and down the line for spay and neutering.
  • Adoption: though not ready for their forever homes quite yet, watch for updates from CARE of DC for when the pups will be well enough.

Follow along with updates on the 'Labs of Patterson' here and kudos to everyone involved in getting these innocent dogs out of an unfortunate situation.
