So I have been looking around for a chance to go learn how to shoot sporting clays. Some people might call it clay shooting or skeet shooting. It all has to do with the little clay discs that get shot into the air.

What is a sporting clay? According to one website they are:

a form of clay pigeon shooting, often described as "golf with a shotgun" because a typical course includes from 10 to 15 different shooting stations laid out over natural terrain.

Your goal (so I am to believe) is that you have to aim where you think the clay is going to go and then shoot. Is that not right? Probably isn't, but that is why I am looking to take a lesson. Here are the places that I found here in the Hudson Valley:

  • Orvis Sandanona, Route 44 in Millbrook. This place interested me because I keep passing it on my way to visit friends in Millbrook, plus I keep seeing a Groupon for them (and you know I love me some Groupons).
  • Mid Hudson Sporting Clays, New Paltz. I had thought that the place in Millbrook was the only one, when my friend, told me about his experiences at MHSC. He said that has been shooting there, but felt that he could benefit from taking a lesson and he loved it.
  • T-M-T Hunting Preserve & Sporting Clays in Staatsburg, they are only open part of the year, looks like mostly in the fall. Check their website for more info.
  • Saint Hubert's Sporting Clay Club, Marlboro, (Need to be a member to shoot there).

Keep in mind that most of these places also have other things that they specialize in to include fly fishing, archery and shooting ranges. Services will vary between each location and some may require membership fees. If you have been to one of the above places and have had a great experience that you would like to share, please email me at Brandi@wrrv.com.
