Tips For Deep-Frying Your Turkey. (Spoiler Alert: Turns Out Tasty)
Ok, so you think you have got this whole Thanksgiving turkey thing down? You are trying something new this year and deep frying it or maybe you just need a bit of a safety refresher before the big day? Here are a few tips from the New York Propane Gas Association for things to remember about deep frying your turkey:
- Set the fryer up on even (level) ground at least 10 feet away from your house. Make sure to never leave it unattended and keep the kids and the pets far away from the fryer.
- Here is one that you think people might know, but probably the #1 item that causes issues. Thaw the turkey. Yes, thaw it and pat it dry before you put the turkey into the oil. Water or extra moisture does not bode well for hot oil. It will cause it to bubble and spurt, potentially causing a fire.
- Watch that temp. Have the mindset that everything it HOT. Use caution when touching the fryer, it is hot. Make sure to wear protective clothing and use oven mitts.
- Have a fire extinguisher near by (just in case). Hopefully, you will not need to use it, but better to be safe and have to order pizza for everyone, then have to head to the ER or have to call the fire dept.
Enjoy your Thanksgiving!
