This weekend I get the pleasure of being at a special fundraising event at Tuthilltown Spirits in Gardiner. The opened up their tasting room over the Columbus Day weekend to kittens, cats, puppies and dogs (and a few dozen people too!). The event was called Tails & Tastings, and benefited the Pets Alive, no-kill animal shelter in 363 Derby Road, in Middletown NY 10958. Tuthilltown donated $1 from each tasting over the weekend to Pets Alive.

Pets Alive is a no kill animal rescue that serves to rescue, rehabilitate and find loving homes for dogs, cats, and farm animals. Out mission is to improve the lives of companion animals everywhere by any means possible.

Here are just two of the pups that checked out the distillery this weekend. Eric Arginsky, the Tasting Room Manager at Tuthilltown Spirits (& volunteer at Pets Alive), told me that children and pets are always welcome in the tasting room and on the distillery tours (but neither can sample).

This is Governor a male dog, he is a very happy guy with some of the softest and fluffiest hair. When you look into his eyes, you will melt. He came to the shelter wearing a super hero collar and a Superman cape. Come to the shelter to meet Governor, he will be happy to be your faithful superhero sidekick.

This is Mona. She is a beautiful girl who has spent way too long in the shelter. She would love nothing more than a yard to run in, an endless supply of dog treats and a spot on the couch where she can just spend time with you, next to you. Since she has been in the shelter for a bit, she will need additional patience from her new family while she adjusts. Mona loves to just sit and have all the little places scratched and will even lean against you will you do it.

How can you help Pets Alive? There are many ways, obviously financial donations are greatly appreciated, but don't think you can't help if money is an issue. Volunteers are a big part of what is needed. Volunteers can walk dogs, help with offsite adoption events, fostering, transporting animals, gardening, laundry and cleaning. There are many many things you can do. To be eligible to volunteer, you will need to attend an orientation and they are held on with first and third Saturdays of the month.

Pets Alive is also accepting donations of the following:

  • Pedigree Can Dog Food, they feed 10 dogs a day
  • Friskies Can Cat Food, they feed 150 cats a day
  • 3lb Paper Food Trays, they use over 200 of these a day, they are available at Sam's Club
  • 9" Paper Plates, they use these for feeding the cats
  • Paper Towels & Contractor Trash Bags

Do you have another way that you think you might be able to help? Email them at info@petsalive.org.
